Toes in the Sand & Sunsets in Hand: The Sandbar Restaurant

If there is one landmark that defines the “Old Florida” soul of Anna Maria Island, it’s the Sandbar Restaurant. Located on the north end of the island where the white sugar sands meet the turquoise Gulf, the Sandbar has been a staple for locals and visitors alike since it first opened its doors as a pavilion back in 1911.
At Crysten’s AMI Boat Tours, we often cruise past this iconic spot, and it’s the #1 place our guests ask about when they’re looking for the ultimate waterfront dining experience. Here is why the Sandbar is a “must-do” on your AMI vacation.
The “Toes-in-the-Sand” Experience
The Sandbar is famous for its unique dining setup. While there is a beautiful indoor dining room with massive windows, the real magic happens on the deck and in the sand.
- Beachfront Dining: You can literally sit at a table with your feet in the sand. It’s casual, elegant, and perfectly captures the island lifestyle.
- The Sunset Celebration: Every evening, the restaurant holds a “Sunset Celebration.” Guests guess the exact time the sun will dip below the horizon—the winner gets a bottle of bubbly!
Local Pro Tip: The Sandbar does not take reservations, and during peak season (February–May), the wait for a sunset table can be 1–2 hours. We recommend arriving at least 90 minutes before sunset, putting your name in, and grabing a cocktail at the beach bar while you wait.
Farm-to-Fork & Sea-to-Table
The Sandbar isn’t just about the view; they are leaders in sustainability. They source much of their produce from their own organic farm, Gamble Creek Farms, and prioritize fresh, local Gulf seafood.
What to Order:
- The Grouper Sandwich: A local classic. Whether you get it blackened, grilled, or fried, it’s arguably the best on the island.
- Stuffed Flounder or Royal Red Shrimp: For a heartier seafood feast.
- Key Lime Pie: You can’t leave Anna Maria Island without a slice, and the Sandbar’s version is consistently top-rated.
More Than Just a Meal: Weddings and Events
If you’ve ever walked past the Sandbar and seen a beautiful white tent with a wedding in progress, you’ve seen The Grand Pavilion. It is one of the most sought-after wedding venues in Florida. With the ability to host up to 160 guests right on the beach, it’s the gold standard for AMI destination weddings.
Make it a Full Day Adventure
Why fight for parking when you can arrive in style? Many of our guests at Crysten’s AMI Boat Tours choose to spend the morning on a private boat tour with us—exploring Egmont Key or snorkeling at the sandbars—and then have us drop them off near the north end of the island just in time for a late lunch or early dinner at the Sandbar.
There is truly nothing better than spending the day on the water and capping it off with a cold drink and a fresh meal as the sky turns pink and orange over the Gulf.
